SORCERER
Introduced by writer/director Josh Safdie (Uncut Gems, Good Time)
With a title derived from a Miles Davis album, a story loosely based on Henry-George Clouzot’s 1953 action-adventure and a haunting electronic score by Tangerine Dream, William Friedkin’s film about an existential struggle with fate had a famously tormented production in remote Latin American locations. It was Friedkin’s favorite of his own movies, but its initial release was marred by bad reviews and the simultaneous release of Star Wars. Friedkin’s gritty, dark realism was no match for George Lucas’ world of pure fantasy. Led by Jackie Scanlon (Roy Scheider), four men from different parts of the world on the run from the law set off on a hazardous journey, during which they must contend with dangerously rocky roads, crumbling bridges, and attacks from local guerillas. They fight for their lives as they struggle to complete their quest to transport a shipment of unstable nitroglycerin to a South American oil well 200 miles away in return for $10,000 and legal citizenship.
