Released in 1985, After Hours occupies a unique place in Martin Scorsese’s filmography. Made between The King of Comedy and The Color of Money, this darkly comic odyssey through downtown Manhattan follows an ordinary office worker whose attempt at a spontaneous night out goes spectacularly wrong. A cult favorite since its release, the film captures the energy, anxiety, and unpredictability of New York City after dark.
When Manhattan office worker Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) meets the intriguing Marcy (Rosanna Arquette) in a late-night café, he impulsively travels downtown to see her. What begins as a simple outing quickly spirals into an increasingly bizarre and chaotic night, as Paul encounters an eccentric cast of strangers and finds himself stranded in a maze of misunderstandings, accidents, and misfortune while desperately trying to make his way home.
