Me and My Gal

New York City police detective Danny Dolan (Spencer Tracy) and streetwise hash-slinger Helen Riley (Joan Bennett) exchange an endless stream of wisecracks and affection in director Raoul Walsh’s beguiling romantic comic-drama, Me and My Gal. This playful genre hodgepodge, set in a working-class, waterfront neighborhood populated by longshoremen and gangsters, episodically charts the relationship between the two while Danny investigates a criminal who–unbeknownst to him–happens to be involved with Helen’s sister. The intoxicating chemistry between Tracy and Bennett and Raoul Walsh’s seemingly effortless mastery of tone and gesture make it easy to see why critic Manny Farber considered Me and My Gal to be his greatest film.
