Behind Closed Doors

Sag Harbor Cinema’s “Projections” education initiative returned, in partnership with The Retreat and in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, for a frank conversation about abuse in our community and your role in helping to end the cycle.

Relationships are complicated, but when one person dominates another through coercive control, threats or abuse – that’s domestic violence. National statistics cite 1 in 4 women, and 1 in 7 men, will be in an abusive relationship at some point in their life. Abuse isn’t happening elsewhere; it is happening right here in our community.

Featuring:

  • Advocate & Survivor Nicole Behrens
  • Retreat Attorney Susan Bereche,
  • Retreat Prevention Education Director Helen Atkinson-Barnes,
  • SPARK Counselor Viviana Bishop,
  • OLA Executive Director Minerva Perez,
  • And moderator Diana Diamond, PhD

Gaslight

Special Screening, Sunday October 24, 7pm.

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Sag Harbor Cinema will have a special one-time screening of Gaslight, the  1944 American psychological thriller film directed by George Cukor and starring Charles Boyer, Ingrid Bergman, Joseph Cotten, and Angela Lansbury (in her film debut). The film follows a young woman whose husband slowly manipulates her into believing that she is descending into insanity. It also serves as the origin for the modern day vernacular “gaslighting.” Gaslighting is a form of manipulation that occurs in abusive relationships. It is an insidious and sometimes covert type of emotional abuse where the bully or abuser makes the target question their judgments and reality.

About the Retreat: The Retreat is a safe haven for families in crisis in the Hamptons and the East End of Long Island. For more than 30 years, the community-based, not-for-profit agency has provided comprehensive domestic violence services for children and adults, support for survivors, and prevention community education.
